Facts/General Knowledge
- Prathamesh Jaju started exploring the field of astrophotography as a hobby in 2018, and he couldn’t believe his photo had gone viral. In an interview he said-
I didn’t expect my image of the moon to go so viral, but yes, it is the best shot I have ever taken.
- Prathamesh Jaju had a passion for space since childhood, and was a big fan of the science fiction films/TV franchises Star Trek and Star Wars.
- Prathamesh was 13 years old when he joined Jyotirvidya Parisanstha (JVP), India’s oldest amateur astronomy club. JVP is an NGO that offers courses in astronomy and astrophotography. They also conduct star-gazing sessions to help their students understand the sky better.
- Before the moon photo went viral, Jeju’s photos of planets like Mars and Jupiter were reposted by several other astrophotography-related accounts.
- It took Prathamesh four hours to click the image of the moon, and he spent three days completing the process and editing. Jaju uploaded the picture with the caption-
This image is an HDR composite of two separate images created to give it a 3 dimensional effect. This is my most detailed and clear shot of the third quarter Mineral Moon yet… I captured about 50,000+ images on 186 gigabytes of data, which nearly exhausted my laptop with processing.
- He explained the process with which he clicked the pictures in an interview with ANI. During the interview he said-
I first captured them (images) by capturing several videos on different small areas of the Moon. Each video contains approximately 2000 frames; First, we stabilize them, then we merge and stack each video into a single image. So I took about 38 videos. We now have 38 images.”
- During the interview, Prathamesh further said that he wanted to become an astrophysicist and study astronomy as his major subject, and astrophotography was just a hobby for him.
