V Prashant Madal is an Indian civil servant of the Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS), deputed as the Chief Accountant in the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) (till 2023). He is the son of BJP MLA Model Virupakshappa. In March 2023, he was arrested by the Karnataka Lokayukta after a raid on the state-owned Karnataka Soap and Detergent Limited (KSDL) office, where he was allegedly caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs. 40 lakh for allotment of tender for providing raw material to Karnataka Soap and Detergent Limited.

Prashant Madal, also known as Prashanth Madal, was born on 9 August in Channagiri, Davanagere, Karnataka. His zodiac sign is Leo. For his graduate studies, he joined the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. After qualifying the examination conducted by the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC), Madal became a Karnataka Administrative Service officer of the 2008 batch.

Prashant Madal’s father Madal Virupakshappa is the MLA from Channagiri in Davanagere district of Karnataka. Virupakshappa, who previously served as the Chairman of Karnataka Soap and Detergent Limited (KSDL) (a company that manufactures the popular Mysore Sandal Soap), resigned on 3 March 2023 after his son was arrested by the Karnataka Lokayukta for accepting Resigned from his post. Bribery of Rs 40 lakh in connection with a tender process of Karnataka Soaps and Detergent Limited. Virupakshappa tendering his resignation wrote a letter to Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai in which he said,
There is some conspiracy against my family. I am resigning under moral responsibility because there is an allegation against me.

Accused in embezzlement case
In 2017, when Prashanth was working as Deputy Accounts Officer of Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited (KIRDL), the bank faced financial irregularities worth Rs 55 crore. An FIR was lodged at Surathkal police station in October against Prashant, then KRIDL chief finance officer Veerangowda Patil and then finance superintendent Shankarachari for misappropriation of funds. According to officials, Prashanth was responsible for choosing the banks where the deposits were to be made and norms were violated during the selection of the bank branch in Mangaluru. Obviously, on August 23, 2023, Rs. Rs 20 crore were deposited in the Kulai branch of Indian Overseas Bank. After a week, an additional Rs 35 crore was deposited in the bank. According to a senior official, ‘As soon as the money was transferred, the people involved opened a current account. A fake certificate of deposit was sent to the government and within a few days all the money was gone. Following the FIR, Prashant, Patil and Shankarachari were suspended from their posts and the case was transferred to CBI for further investigation.

In March 2023, Prashant Madal was arrested by the Karnataka Lokayukta after he was caught allegedly accepting bribes on behalf of his father. Apparently, Prashant had demanded a bribe of Rs. Rs 80 lakh from a contractor in lieu of a tender for procurement of raw materials required for manufacturing soaps and other detergents for Karnataka Soap and Detergent Limited (KSDL). Meanwhile, a person filed a complaint with the Karnataka Lokayukta alleging that the Madal was taking bribes. After receiving the complaint, Lokayukta Superintendent of Police (Bengaluru) and his team laid a trap and caught Prashant red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 40 lakh in his father’s office at Crescent Road.
During the raid, Lokayukta recovered Rs. 1.7 crore unaccounted cash and about Rs. 1.7 crore from his father’s office. Rs 2.2 crore were recovered from Prashant’s office. Soon, Prashanth is arrested by the Karnataka Lokayukta. Later, Lokayukta raided Prashant’s residence and recovered the money. Unaccounted cash worth Rs 6.10 crore was found there.
