In the 2003 assembly elections, Poonam was a candidate from Gol Market assembly constituency against the then Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit and won the election. He served BJP for 25 years as a spokesperson. He switched his party from BJP to AAP in November 2016 and claimed that the party had ignored him for a long time. In 2017, he again changed his party from AAP to Indian National Congress.
Controversy
In 2016, when Poonam left BJP, she claimed that it was Arun Jaitley who was responsible for not giving her a chance to get a ticket for the assembly elections. While talking about his change of party in a media conference, he said,
I left BJP because of Arun Jaitley. He has troubled us a lot. Because of him I did not get the party ticket.”

Facts/General Knowledge
- During the assembly elections in 2003, Poonam went to inspect the polling booth near Bangla Sahib Gurdwara, where she alleged that some Congress workers were beating up BJP workers. When she moved forward to end the fight, Congress workers attacked her too.
- Her husband Kirti had raised doubts and targeted Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) issue. Kirti was accused of breaking party discipline and was suspended from BJP.
- When Poonam left BJP and joined AAP in 2016, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia gave her a warm welcome. In the press conference organized to welcome him, he explained the reason for leaving the party. He said,
I especially see the future of the youth in the Aam Aadmi Party. I left BJP because Arun Jaitley had mistreated us. Despite many promises, he did not give us election tickets. Also, when my husband Kirti Azad raised his voice against corruption, he was suspended. BJP is adopting a dual stance.
- When Poonam left AAP and joined Congress in 2017, Delhi Congress President Ajay Maken welcomed her. He has a long association with the Congress party as his father-in-law Bhagwat Jha Azad was the Congress Chief Minister of Bihar. Explaining the reason for leaving AAP in a press conference, he said,
I have returned to the party that fought for India’s independence. I had no personal problems in the Aam Aadmi Party. But, there was lack of organization. I didn’t like his politics. I want to work with Congress and strengthen it.
- In November 2021, she again changed parties and joined All India Trinamool Congress along with her husband. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee welcomed Poonam and her husband to join the party.
- Poonam’s husband, Kirti, was a right-handed batsman and offspinner, and was a member of the team that played in the 1983 World Cup that India won. The team also included Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and Sandeep Patil.
