Career
Maton was drafted in the 20th round by the San Diego Padres in the 2015 MLB draft. He then made his professional debut in 2015 with the Short Season A Tri-City Dust Devils.
He pitched to a 4-2 win-loss record in 23 relief appearances, a 1.38 ERA, and 58 strikeouts in 322/3 innings pitched.
Maton also pitched for the Class A Fort Wayne TinCaps, Lake Elsinore Storm Avanzado and Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas in 2016. He played a total of 38 games for the three teams, posting a 5-3 record, 1.74 ERA. and 78 strikeouts in 51⁄3 innings.
After the season, he also played for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League. He began the 2017 season with Triple-A El Paso.
San Diego Padres
After Jake Esch was designated for assignment, Maton was recalled by the Padres on June 11, 2017. He pitched in a middle relief position with the major league team for the remainder of the season.
He finished the 2017 season with a 4.19 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 43 innings in 46 games. Phil also began the 2018 season with Triple-A El Paso. He was quickly promoted to the majors when Wil Myers went on the disabled list on April 4.
Phil was placed on the injured list on May 13 with a latissimus dorsi strain. He returned to the team on June 21 following a rehab assignment. Likewise, he was transferred to Triple-A on June 24, 2018.
He was recalled on July 9 after he posted a WHIP under 1.00 in six appearances with El Paso. He remained with the Padres for the rest of the season, pitching in middle relief once again.
Phil finished the season with a 4.37 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 471⁄3 innings. In 2018, his strike rate increased. He was also much less effective after returning from injury. He posted a 0.56 ERA in his 16 innings before going on the disabled list and a 6.32 ERA with the Padres afterward.
Cleveland Indians and Houston Astros
Phil was traded to the Cleveland Indians on July 12, 2019, in exchange for international bonus fund allocations. He posted a 2.92 ERA in 121⁄3 innings in his 9 games with Cleveland.
In 2020, he played a total of 23 games, compiling a 3-3 record with a 4.57 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 21.2 innings.
He and Yainer Díaz were traded to the Houston Astros for outfielder Myles Straw on July 30, 2021. In 2021, he played a total of 27 games and went 4–0 with a 4.97 ERA in 251⁄3 innings.
