Dr Peter Hotez, a scientist and vaccine expert from Houston, said he was at the center of the intense online abuse that brought two people to his home on Sunday.

Dr. Peter Hotez, a vaccine expert, was kicked out of his Houston home after a weekend of online harassment.

Hotez tweeted: “Ugh, a few anti-vaxxers outside my house mocked me for discussing RFK Jr.” “During our scorching heat wave, it was only natural for me to dress up. Why are people like this?

The online attacks on Hotez began when a podcast anti-vaxxer and Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., produced by Joe Rogan, was released late last week.

Hotez criticized the podcast and the false accusations he included in the tweet, prompting further attacks. Promising Hotez $100,000 to appear on his podcast and debate Kennedy, Rogan raised the stakes.

Over the weekend, Twitter was dominated by a back-and-forth attack, with boss Elon Musk joining the attack on Hotez.

On Sunday morning, a man filmed himself approaching Hotez outside the doctor’s home in Houston, ending the harassment. A male user tweeted the video.

The person later said he tried to turn himself in to Houston police, but that claim could not be independently verified.

Hotez admitted to MSNBC on Sunday that he has faced harassment from anti-vaxxers in the past, but this particular period has been difficult for him.

“You know, anti-vaccine lobbying attacks come in waves. But this time it was especially difficult. Because of the constant threatening e-mails and real stalking, as you mentioned,” Hotez noted in an interview with Mehdi Hasan.

“Let’s be honest. When you have RFK Jr., Joe Rogan and Elon Musk working at the same time as a trio… That most likely includes all of your Twitter followers. So it’s pretty devastating,” Hotez said.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hotez, co-director of Texas Children’s Hospital’s Center for Vaccine Development, is nationally known as an expert on the subject who frequently appears in the media to discuss vaccine development and encourage Americans to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Additionally, Hotez is dean of the National Department of Tropical Medicine at the Baylor School of Medicine and a professor at that institution.

Even with all the hate he’s received, Hotez tweeted Sunday night that he has no plans to argue with Kennedy. “Science is not something that is often debated, such as the philosophy of the 18th century Enlightenment or political issues,” he argues.
