Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant criticizes Taylor Swift, calls her music ‘disappointing’

Nowadays everyone is critical. Pet Shop Boys frontman Neil Tennant is throwing shade at Taylor Swift. He wants everyone to know that he doesn’t see much of a fuss when it comes to Swift and her music.

Swift just launched The Department of Tortured Poets, a new album that has been in the works for a couple of years. Swift announced the album earlier at the Grammys. However, Tennant believes that Swift does not deserve her recognition. He compared her to another big name in music: Michael Jackson.

He argued that Swift lacked a catalog like that of the late King of Pop. Tennant voiced his criticism during a live-streamed conversation with The Guardian earlier this week.

“Taylor Swift fascinates me as a phenomenon because she is very popular, and I quite like the whole thing, but when I listen to the records… for such a big phenomenon [as she is]Where are the famous songs? What is ‘Billie Jean’ by Taylor Swift? she asked.

Music critic Alexis Petridis came to the star’s defense. They named one of Swift’s biggest hits “Shake It Off” as proof of her talent. However, Tennant argued that the song did not come close to the same iconic status.

Neil Tennant calls Taylor Swift out

He said, “I heard that the other day and it’s not ‘Billie Jean.'” However, he said that he believes Swift has talent and a “great voice.” He simply thinks her material is disappointing her talent.

“I like the fact that it brings all these people together, even multi-generational, but I think the only disappointing thing is the music, not the lyrics, but the music,” he said.

Previously, Swift spoke about how she deals with both hate and criticism. She said that she often tries to take a diplomatic stance but that she will defend herself when necessary.

“I’m still someone who is the first to apologize when I’m wrong,” Swift said via Business Standard. “But I think I’m better at defending myself when I’ve been hurt. So, I think that’s something that also comes with growth.”

She said she had been wronged before and learned to get over it. “People go on and on about how you have to forgive and forget to get over something. No, you don’t. You don’t have to forgive or forget to move on. You can move forward without any of those things happening. You just become indifferent and then move on,” she said.
