Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke star in the debut trailer for director Pedro Almodóvar’s queer western strange way of life.
“This is a queer western in the sense that there are two men, they love each other and they behave in that situation in opposite ways,” the director once said when describing the film. “What I can tell you about the movie is that it has a lot of western elements. He has the gunman. He has the ranch. He has the bailiff. But what it has that most westerns don’t have is the kind of dialogue that I don’t think a western has ever captured between two men. And now I think I’m telling you too much.

Here’s a synopsis of the 30-minute short film: A man rides a horse through the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake (Hawke). Twenty-five years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva (Pascal), the rancher who comes out to meet him, worked together as hit men. Silva visits him with the excuse of meeting his childhood friend again, and indeed they celebrate their reunion, but the next morning Sheriff Jake tells him that the reason for his trip is not to remember their old friendship….
The film will debut at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival next month.
