Paul Auster, the renowned filmmaker and famous author of “The New York Trilogy,” has died at the age of 77. NPR confirmed Auster’s death through her friend and fellow writer, Jacki Lyden.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1947, Auster enjoyed a distinguished career that spanned several disciplines, including as a celebrated novelist, essayist, translator, screenwriter, and poet. Celebrated around the world, his work has been translated into more than 40 languages.
After graduating from Columbia University in 1970 and moving to France, Auster embarked on translating works by French writers. During this period, she also began publishing her own compositions in American magazines.
Widespread acclaim followed the 1987 publication of “The New York Trilogy,” a groundbreaking series of crime novels. The author’s other highly successful works include 4 3 2 1, Sunset Park, The book of illusionsand Moon Palace.

Paul Auster enjoyed a film career in addition to his literary work
Auster not only wrote but also co-directed several independent films. Among his screenwriting efforts is the 1995 film. Smokestarring Harvey Keitel, Giancarlo Esposito and William Hurt.
In 2017, he published an ambitious 880-page novel titled 4 3 2 1. It explored the life of a single protagonist through four distinct narratives, presented in alternating chapters.
Last year, Siri Hustvedt, the acclaimed author and wife of Paul Auster, revealed on Instagram that she was battling cancer. She revealed that her diagnosis came in December 2022 and that she is currently undergoing treatment. Hustvedt movingly described her experience as living in “Cancerland,” highlighting the impact of her illness on her lives.
“Watching Paul, I understood what grace under pressure looks like,” Hustvedt wrote in a subsequent Instagram post. “Unconditional and without complaints, with his humor intact, he has made this time of his illness, which has lasted almost a year, beautiful, not ugly,” he added.
Residing in Brooklyn, New York, Auster won several prestigious awards, including Spain’s Prince of Asturias Award for Letters in 2006. He belonged to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and held the title of Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des from France. Letters.
Colleagues and fans pay tribute to Paul Auster
In X, the Booker Prize story honored Auster, indicating: “We are very sad to learn of the death of Booker Prize nominee Paul Auster, whose work moved readers and influenced writers around the world, and whose generosity was felt in so many other sectors. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Siri Hustvedt and her family.”
Likewise, writer and archivist Will Errickson noted Auster’s passing. “I read a handful of Paul Auster novels when he worked in bookstores in the ’90s,” Errickson wrote. His film SMOKE was one of the great favorites of independent cinema of the time.”
The Hard Case Crime publishing label also paid tribute to the writer. “Today it broke my heart to read about the death of Paul Auster,” they wrote in X. [He’s] One of my favorite writers since I read the New York Trilogy in the late 80’s. Many other great books since: THE MUSIC OF CHANCE, LEVIATHAN, MOON PALACE, 4321. Do yourself a favor and read it. “He’s worth it.”
