Patti Smith thanks Taylor Swift for her ‘poignant’ comment on ‘The Tortured Poets Department’

Taylor Swift mentioned Patti Smith in a song on her new album. The Department of Tortured Poetsand Patti thanked the singer for her gratitude.

In her song, “The Tortured Poets Department” (the same title as her album), Taylor sings: “I laughed in your face and said, ‘You’re not Dylan Thomas / I’m not Patti Smith / This ain’t the Chelsea Hotel / We are modern idiots.”

On her Instagram, Patti responded to Taylor’s thank you with two photos of her reading. Portrait of the artist as a young dog by Dylan Thomas. The photos were in black and white, matching the vibe of Taylor’s TTPD.

Patti captioned the photos: “This says I was touched to be mentioned in the company of the great Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Thank you, Taylor.”

In 2019, Patti praised Taylor in an interview with The New York Times.

“She’s a pop star who is under tremendous scrutiny all the time, and you can’t imagine what that’s like,” he said. “It’s amazing not being able to go anywhere, do anything, have your hair messy.”

“And I’m sure he’s trying to do something good,” she added. “She’s not trying to do anything wrong. And if that influences some of her avid fans to open their thoughts to her, so what?

Patti took to Instagram to express her gratitude to Taylor, who gave her a beautiful shout-out in song number 2. Taylor also named several other people in TTPD.

For example, the same song includes the line “We declare that Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist.” Additionally, Taylor makes reference to her friends Lucy and Jack (supposedly Lucy Dacus and Jack Antonoff, Taylor’s fellow musicians and friends).

“But you told Lucy you’d kill yourself if I ever left / And I told Jack that about you, so I felt seen,” the lyrics go.

He also mentioned stars like Clara Bow and Stevie Nicks in his song “Clara Bow.”

“’You look like Clara Bow in this light / Remarkable / Your whole life, did you know / They’d pick you like a rose?’” and “’You look like Stevie Nicks / In ’75, the hair and the lips / The crowd goes crazy at your fingertips / Half moonlight, a total eclipse.’”

Fans loved the references throughout their new album. Many also love the fact that she seems to encourage others, especially women, in her industry.
