Patrick Dempsey reveals why raising children in Hollywood is a ‘challenge’

Patrick Dempsey opens up about navigating family life in Hollywood.

He called it “very challenging” to raise them in the entertainment industry.

The actor explained that his children “want to have their own identity, separate from me and that shadow.” He added: “Everyone has unique qualities and has their own goals that they need to develop and harvest themselves and we just try to model our behavior and hope that they realize that.”

“They are all athletic and like to move,” Patrick continued. “Everyone is very disciplined about it and you just try to instil the right values. Hopefully they’ll have the right manners and when they come back and other parents say, ‘Oh, your kids are very polite,’ you’ll say, ‘That’s good to hear.’ And you know they are punished.”

He emphasized that it is difficult “for your children to grow up in Hollywood and be in that environment.”

Patrick explained that he recently read about the importance of a healthy environment for children’s development. He noted that he is “trying to keep that good, calm, loving, safe environment for them.”

The actor finds it more difficult to raise teenagers than younger children.

“Because you need to be around, but they don’t want you around because they’re fighting for their independence, which they should be doing,” he said. “They need to figure out how they interact in the world, they need to learn those boundaries, they need to make mistakes. And you have to be there for them and allow them to learn from that.”
