Olivia Rodrigo addressed a common misconception about her music while stopping by SiriusXM Studios to promote her new album. VISCERA on Wednesday (September 6).
The 20-year-old “vampire” hitmaker hopped on SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up and was asked if she lets people know when she’s writing a song about them.
He explained that he approached the situation on a case-by-case basis and that any conversation is “person to person.” However, he clarified an important point about the music he releases.

Olivia informed fans that a song isn’t necessarily about one person.
“A lot of times I write something that is like an amalgamation of many different people, or sometimes I also write a lot of songs out of fantasy,” he explained. “I think something I’m really proud of on this record [GUTS]It’s also that a lot of the songs are more about growing up than about breakups or falling in love or anything like that. It’s largely me becoming a young adult. And that’s why it’s very introspective.”
He went on to say, “I love telling stories and I love telling stories in songs, and if there was a story that really resonated with me in a movie, I would love to do that too.”
The key takeaway: “Songs are just songs at the end of the day.”
Olivia opened up about the drama surrounding her song “drivers license” (which many believe is about exes Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter) in another recent interview.
