Ahead of the cavalcade of Spider-Men that will come in the animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse a brand-new poster parodies Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. Across the Spider-Verse is the follow-up to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which followed one universe’s Spider-Man, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), as he teamed up with various Spider-Men from across the multiverse. This included a middle-aged Spider-Man (Jake Johnson), Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), the anime SP//dr (Kimiko Glenn), the anthropomorphic pig Spider-Ham (John Mulaney), and the intense Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage).
Today, Sony Pictures, (via The Direct) shared a poster celebrating the many different iterations of Spider-Man over the past two decades. The image is a parody of the poster promoting Taylor Swift’s upcoming Eras Tour, which celebrates the many different looks and musical styles the iconic singer has gone through since the beginning of her career. Tom Holland’s live-action Spider-Man from the Marvel Cinematic Universe stands front and center, surrounded by various tiles depicting the Spider-Men played by Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, as well as a variety of the alternate Spider-Men that come from different universes in the Spider-Verse films. Spider-Man Has A History Of Different Iterations
This isn’t the first meme parody that the company has created to highlight Spider-Man’s legacy, as they also recreated the famous “Spider-Man pointing” meme with Holland, Maguire, and Garfield while promoting 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, Spider-Man is even older than any of the three performers, having originated in Marvel Comics in 1962. The teenager who is given superpowers after being bitten by a radioactive spider has been brought to life in seemingly infinite forms across film and television since then.
Spider-Man has been played by many different voice actors in various animated series, beginning with the 1967 cartoon Spider-Man, starring Paul Soles. Although the first major project to feature him in live-action was 2002’s Spider-Man starring Maguire, two previous television adaptations featured the character in live-action: the short-lived 1978 The Amazing Spider-Man and the Japanese series Spider-Man in that same year. After Maguire’s stint in the role through 2007’s Spider-Man 3, Garfield took the role for 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel before Holland swooped in to play the character in the MCU beginning with 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, which led into his 2017 solo debut Spider-Man: Homecoming.
This Eras Poster parody is both an homage to all this history and a clever way to get fans buzzing about Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Considering how many different versions of Spider-Man have existed through the years, Sony is teasing just how many options they have when drawing inspiration for new characters for Miles Morales to work with. In addition to whatever wacky new characters they can come up with, there is a huge Spider-Man history for them to still draw from for a series of references that are sure to drive fans wild.
