Norman Jewison, director of ‘In the Heat of the Night’, dies at 97

Norman Jewison, director of hit classics such as ‘In the Heat of the Night’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, has died. He was 97 years old.

Jewison died Saturday at his home. But his family does not want to specify exactly where Jewison’s publicist, Jeff Sanderson, announced it.

Jewison reveals the key moment that ‘stuck in his mind’

Jewison was known for his genius in directing racial dramas. So the content of his output often went against what was acceptable in Hollywood. So Jewison decided to break out to the max. In a 2011 interview with NPR, the famous actor talked about an interaction on a bus in his youth that inspired much of the content behind his films.

“The bus driver looked at me,” he said. “He said, ‘Can’t you read the sign?’ And there was a small sign, made of tin, hanging from a wire in the center of the bus. He said, “Colored people in the rear.”

So I turned around and I saw two or three black citizens sitting around me and… a few white people sitting on top of the bus. And I did not know what to do. I was just embarrassed. So I got off the bus and he left me there. I stood under this scorching sun and thought about what had just happened. This was my first experience with racial prejudice. And it really stuck with me.”

‘In the Heat of the Night’ scheduled for reboot

“In the Heat of the Night” is one of those movies that is actually a classic. References to the film are still used in cinema today. Like many classic films, Jewison’s blockbuster is slated for a reboot, according to Deadline.
