Jerry Springer passed away on Thursday at the age of 79. He was a former news anchor and mayor whose namesake TV show featured a three-ring circus of dysfunctional families eager to expose all on weekday afternoons, including fights, profanities, and blurred images of nudity.

At its height, “The Jerry Springer Show” was a ratings powerhouse, a cultural outcast in the United States, and a byword for gory drama. Over the course of its 27-year run, the daytime talk show—famous for its chair-throwing and bleep-filled arguments—became a popular American guilty pleasure, even surpassing Oprah Winfrey’s programme at one point.
Springer referred to it as “escapist entertainment,” but some believed that the programme was causing a loss in American social standards by dumbing them down.
“Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried, whether that was politics, broadcasting, or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word,” said Jene Galvin, a family spokesperson and friend of Springer’s since 1970, in a statement. He is irreplaceable, and his passing hurts deeply, but his mind, heart, and humour will live on in our memories.
After a brief illness, Springer passed away quietly at home in a suburb of Chicago, according to the statement.
On his Twitter account, Springer humorously identified himself as the “Talk show host, ringmaster of civilization’s end.” In addition, he frequently made lighthearted remarks to the effect that he wished someone “may you never be on my show.”
The show terminated in 2018 after more than 4,000 episodes, without wavering from its fundamental salaciousness: some of its final episodes had names like “Stripper Sex Turned Me Straight,” “Stop Pimpin’ My Twin Sister,” and “Hooking Up With My Therapist.”
In the late 1990s, as his daily programme drew close to 7 million viewers, Springer provided an argument against disgust in a “Too Hot For TV” video.
Believe this: The politicians and businesses that seek to control what each of us can view are a much greater danger to America and our valued freedom than any of our guests ever were or could be, Springer said. “Look, television does not and must not create values, it’s merely a picture of all that’s out there — the good, the bad, the ugly,” he continued.
He attended Tulane University to study political science and Northwestern University to earn his law degree. He was involved in politics for most of his adult life and was considering running for Ohio governor as recently as 2017.
He entered the fray during the disastrous 1968 presidential campaign of Robert F. Kennedy as an assistant. Before being chosen for city council in 1971, Springer, an attorney in Cincinnati, tried unsuccessfully for Congress in 1970.
