Nitin Gadkari was interested in politics from a very young age. He joined Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1976. He had actively participated in the university student elections which resulted in ABVP winning all the seats in Nagpur University student body. In 1981, Gadkari organized the 28th National Conference of ABVP, where he was elected as the President of Nagpur Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). He was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council from the Graduate constituency in 1990. He was appointed as the Public Works Department (PWD) Minister in the Government of Maharashtra in 1995. He held his position as MLC for 4 consecutive terms from 1990 to 2008. He became the leader of the opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 1996.
He was appointed as the President of Maharashtra BJP in 2004. In December 2009, Gadkari was made the national president of the BJP. He held this position until January 2013; When Rajnath Singh was appointed national president of BJP. He contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election from Nagpur constituency and won. He was inducted as the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways in the Narendra Modi government.
