At the age of ten, Nishad Kumar chose to participate in sports and athletics. Initially, he started training under coach Ramesh at Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Katohar Khurd, Himachal Pradesh. Apart from high jump, he also participated in 200 meter and 400 meter race. In 2009, he started participating in para athletics in the high jump category.
He won a silver medal in the sub-junior category at the National School Games in Patiala in 2013. She again won a silver medal in the high jump of 1.83 meters at the National Para Athletics Championships in 2017. In November 2019, Nishad Kumar won a bronze medal in the men’s T47 category at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships held in Dubai. Nishad won the gold medal in the T46 category at the 2021 World Para Athletics Grand Prix held in Dubai. After winning this championship, he qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. On 23 October 2023, Nishad won the gold medal in men’s high jump T47 at the Asian Para Games held in Hangzhou, China. In the event, he made a record by jumping 2.02 meters.
