Nirmala Sitharaman is an Indian politician belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party. He currently serves as the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs of India. Sitharaman has been a member of the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka since 2014.

Nirmala Sitharaman was born on 18 August 1959 (age 64 years; as in 2023) in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. His zodiac sign is Leo. He spent his childhood in different parts of Tamil Nadu as his father worked in the Indian Railways and his job was transferable. He did his schooling from Madras and Tiruchirappalli. Sitharaman graduated from Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College and went to Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi to pursue a Master of Economics and a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.).

He encountered politics at JNU, where while living in Godavari Hostel, he campaigned vigorously for Nalini Ranjan Mohanty for the post of President. Sitharaman then enrolled for a PhD in Indo-European textile trade, but could not complete it as her husband won a scholarship to the London School of Economics and they moved to London. In London, Nirmala worked as a salesgirl at Habitat, a home decor store in Regent Street, London.

When Nirmala was studying at Jawaharlal Nehru University, she met political commentator and communications consultant Parakala Prabhakar. Both of them got married in 1986. The couple have a daughter, Wangmayi.

Nirmala started her career as an assistant to an economist at the Association of Agricultural Engineers in London. Subsequently, he worked as a senior manager in the research department of PricewaterhouseCoopers, London. After this he worked for some time in BBC World Service. In 1991, Sitharaman returned to India. Here, he served as a deputy. Director of the Center for Public Policy Studies in Hyderabad. During the NDA regime (1998–2004), Nirmala was nominated to the National Commission for Women (NCW), but her tenure ended immediately when the UPA came to power in 2004. When she joined NCW, Nirmala came in contact with Sushma Swaraj. Who was impressed by his work and recommended him to join the party (BJP). Sitharaman joined the BJP in 2008 and was appointed the party spokesperson in 2010.

She came to Delhi from Hyderabad. In 2014, Sitharaman became the Commerce Minister with independent charge in Narendra Modi’s cabinet. Following the cabinet reshuffle he was promoted and given the portfolios of Finance and Corporate Affairs. On 3 September 2017, Nirmala replaced Arun Jaitley and became India’s first full-time female Defense Minister.

She became the second woman in the country to hold the post after Indira Gandhi, who once held the charge for 20 days. On 30 May 2019, Nirmala became the first full-time female Finance Minister of India.
