Nikolaus Fischer Wiki, Wikipedia, Alter, Jürgen Marcus – Klaus Fischer was born in 1936 in the small rural community of Kunzendorf/Biele, which is now known as Trzebieszowice, Poland. Silesia was then a German province. He attended primary education there up to their deportation from their own country in 1946.

Nikolaus Fischer Bio

His elementary education was continued in the western German city of Suedlohn/Westphalia, where he also finished middle school in the nearby town of Stadtlohn in 1954. The next two years were spent studying to become a technical chemist (Chemotechniker). He worked for a significant chemical firm for a year before enrolling at the University of Tübingen in Tübingen, Germany, to study chemistry. He received the equivalent of a BS in 1960, an MS in 1963 (Diplom-Chemiker), and a Doctor of Natural Sciences in Chemistry (organic synthesis) from that institution in 1965. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Texas in Austin for two years before joining the faculty of the LSU Chemistry Department in 1967.

Due to visa restrictions, he was forced to return to Europe between 1968 and 1970, where he worked as an assistant at the Organic Chemistry Institute at the University of Zürich in Switzerland. Up until his retirement in 1999, Klaus was a member of the LSU faculty, teaching chemistry since 1979 and serving as the Charles Barré Professor from 1997 to 1999. In the 1990s, he also held the position of Adjunct Professor of Botany. He served as Professor, Chair of the Department of Pharmacognosy, and Research Professor, RIPS at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS, from 1999 to 2003.

Klaus enjoyed singing in the bass part of the Baton Rouge Choral Society (later the Baton Rouge Symphony Chorus) while attending LSU. He could be seen on the LSU campus playing tennis or jogging. He and his wife Helga had taken to travelling since his retirement. He is currently researching the history of Silesia, his long-lost country, as well as his family’s ancestry. Two books are the product of this study.

Nikolaus Fischer Research Interests

The study of organic molecules from higher plants was a major component of our research programme in natural products chemistry, with a special emphasis on the isolation, structural determination, chemistry, biomimetic, and biosynthetic studies of terpenoids, particularly sesquiterpene lactones. The focus of our early research was on the chemotaxonomy (biochemical systematics) of the sunflower family genera.

Additionally, bioassay-guided searches for bioactive metabolites were carried out, and chemical alterations of active natural compounds revealed correlations between structure and activity. The separation, chemistry, and biosynthesis of natural polyacetylenes from plant hairy root cultures, as well as the chemical and mechanistic elements of chemically mediated plant-plant interactions (allelopathy) in the Florida Scrub, were other areas of focus.

Nikolaus Fischer Honor and Awards

Mexican Academy of Sciences Corresponding Member since 1997. (1995–1996), I served as the Phytochemical Society of North America’s president. Distinguished Faculty Award from the LSU Alumni Association (1996). Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award from the LSU College of Basic Sciences (1995). Distinguished Research Master from LSU in 1989. The Baton Rouge Sections of the ACS and AIChE jointly presented the Charles E. Coates Memorial Award in 1987. (1979) LSU Distinguished Faculty Fellow
