News Nicole Hockley
Twenty first graders and six teachers were shot dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School ten years ago. Among the victims was Dylan Hockley. So we’ll never know what he could be,” said Nicole Hockley. “He is simply a very wonderful boy, and he is forever 6 years old.” But. It makes me so happy when I think about him.
Dylan is a cheerful, mischievous and funny first grader. Ten years after the unthinkable happened, Nicole Hockley will forever remember her son this way. On December 14, 2012, a gunman opened fire inside an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.
Hockley added: “Sometimes it’s really hard for me to realize that, you know, he’s 16 now. “He’s still six years old, but in ten years he’ll be 26.” And I really can’t wrap my head around that.”
Turning her grief into action, Nicole Hockley took it upon herself to preserve the memory of her son. Along with Mark Barden, Daniel’s father, another first grader who died that day, she helped found the Sandy Hook Promise organization. The organization’s effective campaign “Say Something” encourages students to spot dangerous flags.
“We have prevented 11 possible school attack plans. 400 suicides have been prevented, thousands of mental health interventions, abuse and isolation have been reduced. As a result, programs have been reduced. This program works perfectly and we will just extend them.
Hockley has been fighting for gun safety legislation for years, often with setbacks, but last summer something finally happened thanks to his efforts. Both houses of Congress have passed the bipartisan gun safety bill. The “Safer Communities Act” strengthens background checks, helps states enforce red flag laws, invests in mental health, and increases school safety.
According to some, it has gone too far. It’s the most important gun safety law passed in 30 years. That was a big problem then. Only after a similar elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, and nearly ten years after the Sandy Hook incident, did the bill become law.
