Newton Earp was born on October 7, 1837 in Ohio County, Kentucky, United States. Newton Jasper Earp was his real name. Newton was the son of Nicholas Porter Earp and Abigail Storm. His father was a soldier, farmer, teacher and cooper. Likewise, his mother was a ballet dancer.
He had eight siblings named James Earp, Warren Earp, Virgil Earp, Morgan Earp, who was a sheriff, Martha Elizabeth Earp, Wyatt Earp, who was a hunter, gambler, gunslinger, boxing referee, sheriff and miner, as well as Adelia Douglas Earp, Virginia Ann. Earp, who was a mail carrier, Mariah Ann Earp.

Newton Earp ran against his brother Wyatt for the constable position, but his brother won by 137 votes and his father Nicholas lost the election for justice of the peace. In 1861, during the start of the Civil War, Newton joined the Union Army with his brother James and Virgil.
While wrestling for the 17th Illinois, James suffered a major shoulder injury during the engagement at Fredericktown and then returned home. but Newton and Virgil fought throughout the war. Additionally, Newton was promoted to the rank of fourth sergeant on January 1, 1865.
He retired from the army in Louisville, Kentucky, on June 26, 1865. After that, Newton worked as a saloon manager. They returned to the mild west in 1868. When they settled in Lamar, Missouri, Newton often farmed there. He also became a carpenter.
