New MCU Guardians Of The Galaxy Costumes Explained

The new trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is here, featuring new costumes for Star-Lord’s team that are incredibly comic-accurate. Originally a band of misfits and outlaws, the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy have greatly evolved over the years since their debut in 2014. As such, it seems as though the Guardians have become a dynamic team of legitimate heroes complete with matching uniforms that call back to their original costumes from Marvel Comics.

As established in Thor: Love and Thunder and the recent Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, the team has been traveling the galaxy in their new ship dubbed The Bowie, searching for various crises they can assist while based out of Knowhere. Now, the new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer released at 2022’s CCXP sees the team arriving at a new planet wearing their brand-new blue and red uniforms. Resembling the team’s original costumes from the costumes before they were changed to better match their MCU counterparts, the return of these suits brings the evolution of the on-screen Guardians full circle for their final chapter.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’s Costumes Are A Lot More Comic Book Accurate

Originally in Marvel Comics, Star-Lord’s pre-2014 iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy all had the same red and blue uniforms (even Groot). However, the first Guardians of the Galaxy film represents one of the first major instances where the MCU had a direct impact on the style and look of the comics going forward, with the comics giving every Guardian their own distinct look that more or less matched their on-screen counterpart. This was especially true for Star-Lord’s Guardians costume, which was revised to embrace a much more rugged look as a legendary outlaw. Everything from his clothes, helmet, and weaponry was changed to match the version played by Chris Pratt in the live-action movies (including large parts of his personality).

Now, the blue and red uniforms have returned, making their MCU debut for the Guardians’ final chapter. While it doesn’t seem as though Groot is being forced to fit into a uniform, it does look as though everyone else is following the mandate of matching uniforms (even Drax and his sensitive nipples). Although the Guardians did wear matching Ravager gear in the first film, it was only temporary for the Battle of Xandar alongside the Nova Corps. By comparison, these new uniforms feel much more permanent and meaningful.

Why The MCU Changed The Guardians’ Costumes

While the idea of bringing the Guardians back to their comic roots for this last film is very satisfying, the in-universe idea for the matching uniforms likely comes from Star-Lord wanting to be a more legitimate and official team of heroes (rather than being seen as criminals). This is also a sentiment that’s been expressed very recently in the comics with the Guardians having been recognized as the galaxy’s official defenders, complete with all of them getting a more tactical take on the classic red and blue. It also hints at the theme running throughout the trailer, which is that the Guardians are one, a team that sticks together no matter what. As it stands, one could see Star-Lord being inspired by the heroics of the Avengers of Earth during Endgame and wanting to follow suit, hence the new suits for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
