Nerene Virgin, actress best known for her role in Today is special, He reportedly passed away at the age of 77.
According to her obituary, Virgin died on January 15 at the Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, Ontario. The cause of her death was not revealed.
“Nerene was brave, vibrant, multi-talented, beautiful, a pioneer, Canadian and with an incredible smile,” Virgin’s obituary further reads. “Her spirit graced the realms of teaching, acting, journalism, storytelling and social justice. She illuminated the spaces she entered and left an indelible mark on the hearts and souls of many. Nerene set the example. Her strength serves as a source of inspiration for future generations.”
In addition to her achievements in education, acting and journalism, Virgin was also described as a storyteller. “His messages from her focused primarily on leadership lessons rooted in her notable ancestry. Her brilliance reflected a deep understanding of the human experience and a passion for storytelling that transcended genres.”
With Today is special, Nerene Virgin also appeared in other television shows such as Night Heat, Police Surgeon, and Perry Mason. She was named one of Canada’s 100 Successful Black Canadian Women in 2016 and was honored for her professional achievements in 2012. Virgin is also a recipient of the Rev. John C. Holland Award, which is an award named after her great-uncle John Christie Holland.

While speaking with CBC Hamilton, Nerene Virgin’s husband Alan Smith spoke about the actress and their life together.
“I am very happy to have met her,” Smtih said of Virgin. “Her whole purpose was to consider her a role model and act accordingly. Fight racism and make black people in Canada proud.”
Nerene Virgin’s nephew, Amani Smith, also said that she constantly broke many barriers throughout her life. She “was rewriting the script for how a black person can move through the world.”
Amani then said she was sad and felt selfish for wanting more time with her aunt. “I couldn’t ask for anything… She helped guide me. “We would talk for hours… I just loved her so much.”
Former television producer Robert Lawlor, who worked with Virgin on Watch out for Toronto, He said they also remained close friends over the years. “I had a front-row seat to see how a true professional worked in front of and behind the camera,” she added. “In all my years in the television business, I have never worked with anyone who could compare to Nerene and her talent.”
