Neil Gaiman Responds To Coraline 2 Rumors

Author Neil Gaiman responds to Coraline 2 rumors, shutting down a fan’s question regarding a movie sequel being set for a November release. Published in 2002, Gaiman’s original novella centered on the titular character as she and her family move into a new house, where she discovers a hidden door that transports her to a seemingly idyllic parallel universe. However, Coraline begins to discover a more sinister nature to the alternate world and finds her and her family’s life put in danger.

Coraline was first adapted for the screen in 2009 with The Nightmare Before Christmas‘ Henry Selick writing, directing and producing with an ensemble cast including Dakota Fanning in the titular role, Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, Keith David, Ian McShane, John Hodgman and Robert Bailey Jr. Produced in stop-motion animation by Laika in their first feature, the film scored largely positive reviews for its faithfulness to its source material and its imaginative visuals, going on to receive both an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Feature. Coraline was also. box office success, grossing over $124 million worldwide against its $60 million budget, leaving many hopeful for a follow-up, though the likelihood of one happening seems low.

One fan recently took to Twitter to ask author Neil Gaiman about a reported Coraline 2 rumor that a sequel movie is set to come out later this year. Gaiman responded to the rumors, bluntly shutting down the possibility of a follow-up to the 2009 adaptation. See Gaiman’s response below:

Gaiman’s response to the Coraline 2 rumors isn’t the first time the author has shut down the potential of a follow-up to his novella. One fan took to asking Gaiman for a sequel in early 2021 on Twitter, to which he rejected as he felt a desire to wait for a story that was just “as good as or better than” the original Coraline as he felt there to be no point in making a follow-up if it couldn’t at least match the quality set by its predecessor. Though Gaiman’s new response to Coraline 2 rumors is brief and to the point, it seems likely the author feels very much the same as he did before.

While some may be eager for Coraline 2 to come to be, it’s probably for the better that a sequel doesn’t get off the ground any time soon, if at all. The first film largely wrapped up its various plot threads, delivering closure to the ghosts who were previously held capture by The Beldam and effectively getting rid of the key to the other world by tossing it down the well hidden within the nearby forest. Though Coraline 2 may not be in the cards, audiences can at least look forward to another Gaiman adaptation getting off the ground soon as The Sandman is set to hit Netflix later this year.
