At the height of the Iranian Revolution, her parents moved to London less than a month later. As a child she played violin and ballet. Hazrat Safi Ali Shah, a 19th-century Persian philosopher and poet, was her great-great-grandfather.
Nazanin Boniadi attended a private high school before enrolling at the University of California, Irvine, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences with honors. Nazanin received the Chang Pin-Chun Undergraduate Research Award while attending university for her work in molecular research involving cancer treatment and heart transplant rejection.
