In January 2021, he was appointed as the Director of Training Academy at PTV in Islamabad.
Shoaib Akhtar’s controversy
He made headlines on 26 October 2021 during a live chat show of former cricketers; Shoaib Akhtar, Vivian Richards, David Gower, Rashid Latif and Sana Mir after the T20 World Cup match between Pakistan and New Zealand telecast on PTV channel.
In a conversation, Shoaib said that the performance of fast bowler Harris Rauf has improved since he has played for Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Interrupting the statement, Nauman said that Shaheen Shah Afridi is the discovery of Lahore Qalandars in PSL. On this, Shoaib reiterated that he is talking about Harris Rauf who has taken four wickets against New Zealand in the 2021 T20 World Cup.
This triggered the incident and Nauman asked Shoaib to leave the show with these lines,
“You’re being a little rude and I don’t want to say this: but if you’re being too clever, you can leave. I’m saying this on-air.
Given the tense atmosphere, Nauman immediately went to a commercial break. After the resumption, Shoaib was seen sitting there in an uncomfortable position. To make the show run smoothly, both the celebrities pretended that it was just to pull each other’s leg. Soon, Akhtar left the show after apologizing to the other guests.

He later resigned from the post of cricket analyst from PTV. After the incident, Shoaib said that he actually felt humiliated in front of other celebrity guests present there and the latter’s words were just to defuse the situation. He wrote on his official Twitter handle,
“Dr Nauman was obnoxious and rude when he asked me to leave the show, it was embarrassing, especially when on your set you had luminaries like Sir Vivian Richards and David Gower sitting with some of my contemporaries and superiors and millions of people watching. I tried to save everyone the embarrassment by saying that I was pulling Dr. Noman’s leg with the mutual understanding that he would also politely apologize and we would move on with the show, which he refused to do .Then I had no other option.”
There are several clips circulating on social media so I thought I would clarify. When Noman asked me to leave the show he was obnoxious and rude, it was especially embarrassing when you had luminaries like Sir Vivian Richards and David Gower sitting on the set with some of my contemporaries.
-Shoaib Akhtar (@shoaib100mph) 26 October 2021
This led to many cricket fans around the world condemning his inappropriate behavior towards the great fast bowler. Many fans wrote on Twitter,
Dr. Nauman Niaz (@DrNaumanNiaz) should apologize publicly on live TV. We do not want to show embarrassment to our legend Shoaib Akhtar (@shoaib100mph), in front of so many giants. This is completely unfair.#PAKvNZ #gameonhigh#PTVSports

Narcissist Nauman Niaz really needs to learn how to treat his guests. Shoaib Akhtar did not deserve to be embarrassed like this… on live TV.

Responding to all the criticism, Nauman replied,
“One side of the story always attracts.”
He further clarified,
“I wonder why someone has to be reminded that shoaib100mph is a star. He [Akhtar] Has been the best of the best, will always remain so. He has brought glory to the country, this cannot be denied. One side of the story always attracts [attention] Still, having been a friend for centuries, I will always wish him the best.”
controversies
Signed contract with Karachi Kings
The controversy occurred in 2017 when it was alleged that Nauman Niaz had tarnished the image of PTV Sports channel, which is owned by ARY Communications, after signing a contract with Karachi Kings. In his defence, Nauman said,
“Why was he made OSD? Theoretically and morally it was wrong if PTV Sports could make Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United its media and brand partners then what was wrong with Karachi Kings. The PSL is owned by the Pakistan Cricket Board of which the Prime Minister is the patron. If Najam Sethi definitely has a conflict of interest by working with a television group and being the head of the PCB executive committee and at the helm of the PSL. Interestingly, if Sethi could have been photographed smiling with the CEO of ARY, why was he not reprimanded? This should have been done on the basis of equality. Karachi Kings may be owned by Salman Iqbal of ARY Communications Limited, however, it is one of the most expensive PSL franchises run by the PCB. If PCB can make money from ARY owned Karachi Kings then what is wrong in PTV doing the same? If Karachi Kings was a legitimate recognized franchise of PSL like Lahore Qalandars, Islamabad United, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators, then why is there a discriminatory stance of the government against PTV Sports becoming their media and brand partner.
