August 7 is observed as National Handloom Day in India every year. There is no official theme announced for the 9th anniversary of the event. So, it seems this year will carry forward the previous year’s theme, “Handloom, an Indian legacy”, which focuses on the rich heritage of handloom and its significant contribution in the Indian economy.

National Handloom Day 2023: History

India is the land of the biggest handloom industry. It is one of the most important sources of economy in rural and semi-urban areas. The day commemorates the Swadeshi Movement launched on 7th August 1905.

According to the official government website, “In 2015, the Government of India decided to designate the 7th of August every year, as the National Handloom Day. The first National Handloom Day was inaugurated on 7 August 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai.”
