Natalie Woods began performing as a child star at the age of four, and at the age of eight she starred in the movie Miracle on 34th Street in 1972. Natalie began her screen appearance as a very conscientious child actress. Under California law, performers under the age of 18 must spend at least three hours in the classroom. “I always felt terrible when the crew was waiting for 3 hours,” Wood recalled. I rushed to the sets as soon as the class ended. Director Joseph L. Mankiewicz always remembered Natalie and declared, ‘I never met a smarter moppet!’
Natalie graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1956 and secured a contract with Warner Brothers. Wood had even greater success as a television performer, garnering strong ratings and critical acclaim. When Elia Kazan auditioned Natalie for Splendor in the Grass, he asked her what motivated her. Wood said: ‘I am being psychoanalyzed by (her husband) Robert J. Wagner.’ ‘Well, that worked!’ writes Kazan later. Her unfinished science film ‘Brainstorm’ was released posthumously.
