“When I started using, that was one of the things I tried to hide: the pain. “Addiction is such a… it’s silly, it really is,” Naomi said.
“You think, ‘Oh, that wound is going to heal.’ Not so,” she continued. “It can cause enormous fear and anxiety. “Then I got very angry.”
She went on to say that she had learned about “chosen families” through her friendship with Gianni, so his murder in 1997 was incredibly challenging for her.
“He was very sensitive to feeling me, like he was pushing me. He would push me to step out and go further when he thought he didn’t have the strength to do so. So when he died, my pain became very intense,” Naomi recalled.
She battled addiction for five years before collapsing in the middle of a photo shoot in 1999.
“When you try to cover up something, your feelings, you talk about abandonment. I tried to cover that with something. You can’t cover it up,” she shared. “It was killing me. It was very painful”.
The situation led her to enter rehab, which she said was “one of the best and only things I could have done for myself at that time.”
“It’s taken me many years to work and deal with it,” he said of the addiction. “And sometimes it still comes up. But now I have the tools to deal with it when it arises.”
The supermodels is streaming now on Apple TV+.
