Career
Nancy started skating when she was little. She became nationally known after finishing fourth in the junior division at the 1987 US Figure Skating Championships. The following season, she debuted in the senior competition. Her national rise continued when she finished third at the 1991 USA Figure Skating Championships. She qualified for the 1991 World Figure Skating Championships where she won bronze.
She won bronze at the 1992 Olympics. The following year, she won the US national championships in 1993. She was also a 1994 Olympic silver medalist and a two-time world medalist. In 1994, Kerrigan was attacked with a police baton by an assailant hired by Tonya Harding’s ex-husband. The event was called “The Whack Heard Round the World”.
She immediately recovered from her knee injury and began rigorous training. She won a silver medal at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics at the Hamar Olympic Amphitheater. Kerrigan retired from competition in 1995. In 2004, she was inducted into the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
