Biography of Murray McArthur
Murray McArthur was born and raised in Devon. He often depicts parts of Scotland as the son of a mushroom grower, who is of Scottish descent and has red hair. He attended King’s School, Ottery St Mary, graduated in English and Drama from Loughborough University with a BA (Joint Hons), then went on to study acting at Drama Studio London. He is a member of the Devon County Youth Theatre.
Career
He has acted in a number of theatrical productions at British regional theaters as well as in London’s West End (including the Royal National Theater and Shakespeare’s Globe). His stage career has taken him around the world (Ahmanson Theatre, Los Angeles & Panasonic Globe Theatre, Tokyo). “The emphasis on the touching relationship between Pip and Joe Gargery is an important part of the story and the blacksmith, played by Murray McArthur in the best performance of the evening, achieves this,” Ireland Independent critic Bruce Arnold commented of his portrayal of Joe Gargery in Great Expectations at the Gate Theater in Dublin.
Murray appeared in Doctor Who episode The Girl Who Died[8][9] as Hasten, the Viking who broke the Doctor’s acoustic glass.
McArthur played a Wildling frontman in Game of Thrones season five of HBO Hardhome. His character reappeared in the sixth season episode The Broken Man as Dim Dalba. When Jon Snow (the character), Tormund Giantsbane, Sansa Stark, and Davos Seaworth asked him to join them to fight Ramsay Bolton’s forces, he spoke on behalf of the Wildlings of The Gift.
Murray plays Hákon Iron-beard in Robert Eggers’ revenge film The Northman, scheduled for release in April 2022. Production on the film was delayed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, which restarted in August 2020 and finally ended in early December 2020.
McArthur appears as “Dad” in the British psychological thriller Marooned Awakening in 2021. Principal photography takes place on the island of Guernsey in September 2021. On September 3, 2022, the feature film screened at the Beau Séjour Theater in Guernsey.
