Nearly four months after Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell passed away after battling cancer, Mama June Shannon revealed that she hasn’t seen her granddaughter Kylee since the late reality TV star’s funeral.
While promoting his reality show Mom June: family crisis, Shannon opened up about the situation between her and Anna’s daughters, Kaitlyn and Kylee.
“This is the truth,” Shannon said. “Kylee’s dad shouldn’t be raising Kylee and I shouldn’t be raising Kaitlyn. [Their] “My mother, Anna, should raise them and that’s what I say over and over again.”
Mama June also said that she has told Kaitlyn often that she will never replace her mother. She further claimed that she had not seen Kylee since Anna’s funeral. The eight-year-old girl has been in the custody of her father, Anna’s ex-husband, Michael Cardwell.
Shannon currently has custody of Kaityln. This is because Anna never publicly revealed who the father of the 11-year-old boy is. She noted that Kaitlyn continues to thrive and is doing well even though her world is “upside down.”
“I can’t vouch for Kylee because we’ve seen her since the funeral,” Mama June continued. “But Kaitlyn is doing amazing. She goes to public school. She is doing better than her at her private school as far as grades and stuff.”
Shannon said she’s sure Kaitlyn has her good days and her bad days. “Just like me, I have my good days and my bad days.”
As for how she’s been doing since her daughter’s passing, Mama June said it’s been an emotional time.
Anna’s final appearances on the show will be revealed this summer. The episodes will deal with Anna’s struggles as she went through treatment.
“It’s going to be traumatic for a lot of us to watch,” Shannon added.
Mama June was involved in a custody battle for Kaitlyn after Anna’s death
Weeks after Anna’s death, Mama June was involved in a custody lawsuit over Kaitlyn.
Anna’s ex, Michael, had filed a lawsuit against Shannon for custody of the 11-year-old girl. He stated in court documents that he had “fully and completely assumed a permanent, unequivocal, committed and responsible fatherly role” in Kaitlyn’s life.
Michael also stated that he “devoted himself to the constant care” of Kaitlyn. He also established a bond and a dependency relationship with her. He further said that while he and Anna ended her marriage in 2017, he was still very involved in Kaitlyn’s life.
“Both petitioner and parents understood, recognized, accepted, and behaved as if petitioner were the child’s father,” Michael’s lawsuit states. “And he accepted full and permanent responsibilities as the child’s father without expectation of financial compensation.”
Although Anna never revealed the identity of Kaitlyn’s father to the public, Michael claimed that a man named Caleb Clark was the girl’s biological father. However, he noted that Clark has no legal relationship with Kaitlyn.
