Early life
Mollie Tibbetts was born as Mollie Cecilia Tibbetts on May 8, 1998in San Francisco, California, United States. He was born to parents Rob Tibbetts (father) and Laura Tibbetts (mother).
She went to Iowa with her mother and two brothers when her parents divorced while she was in second grade. Tibbetts was a resident of Brooklyn, Iowa, a small town about 70 miles (110 km) east of Des Moines, and was studying psychology at the University of Iowa at the time of her disappearance.
Disappearance
Former cross-country runner Tibbetts went for a late-night run on July 18, 2018 from her boyfriend’s house in Brooklyn. Her family reported her missing after she failed to show up for work the next day.
She was last seen around 7:30 p.m. CDT. She had a brief phone conversation with her lover of 3 years just before going for a run, police said. Her partner was 130 miles (210 kilometers) away in Dubuque, Iowa, where she had to travel for work.
Later that night, he claimed, he received a Snapchat message from her that appeared to show him inside.

Investigation
Police from numerous states investigated hundreds of leads in the case over the next few weeks, including an unsubstantiated sighting at a truck stop in Kearney, Missouri, but were unable to find Tibbetts. More than 2,300 leads were received and more than 500 interviews were conducted throughout the investigation.
Also, the cause of death was given as “multiple stab wounds.” And the manner of death was listed as “homicide” by the Iowa State Medical Examiner during an autopsy on Aug. 23.
Mollie Tibbetts – Suspect
At the time of the incident, Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 24, was living and working in the remote area of Poweshiek County, where Tibbetts went missing. Before working at Yarrabee Farms near Brooklyn, Iowa, in August 2014, she had previously worked on another farm. Additionally, Rivera used the name John Budd to identify himself and get the money from her.

Additionally, after receiving video from a neighboring security camera showing a Chevrolet Malibu coming and going in the area where Tibbetts was jogging, police turned their attention to Rivera.
Police approached him without incident after tying him to the car. They claimed that he admitted to kidnapping, murdering and disposing of his body after the crime. The Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the body was taken to a remote area of a cornfield.

US Citizenship and Immigration Services claimed that none of its systems indicated that Rivera “has lawful immigration status.” The Lang family granted Rivera permission to reside rent-free on his property as part of his job. When asked about Rivera’s legal status, Yarrabee Farms initially claimed that he had used the government’s E-Verify program.
After E-Verify reported that Yarrabee Farms was not enrolled in its program, Yarrabee Farms confirmed that Rivera had provided false information. And he claimed it was the Social Security Administration system he used.
Mollie Tibbetts – Legal Proceedings
Rivera was charged with first degree murder on August 22, 2018. When the prosecutor identified him as a flight risk, the judge increased his bond from $1 million to $5 million. On August 24, Rivera changed lawyers. Rivera’s relatives have privately retained married couple Chad and Jennifer Frese, who work at the same law firm, to represent him. Rivera pleaded not guilty on September 19.
In addition, Rivera’s criminal trial began on May 17, 2021, after numerous delays caused by other court cases and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Rivera was convicted of first-degree murder on May 28, 2021. He was to be held without bail, the judge ruled.
Additionally, the required fee for Rivera was life in prison without the possibility of release. The death penalty is not applicable in Iowa. Likewise, Rivera received a life sentence without the possibility of parole on August 30, 2021. He will serve his life sentence here in a maximum security facility.

His initials were placed on the team jerseys by Tibbetts’ younger brother and his football team as a tribute. Some runners used the hashtag #MilesforMollie to draw attention to the safety and harassment issues runners face in light of their attack.

The politicization of Tibbetts’ death
Politicians used the case as justification for tougher immigration laws. Despite evidence suggesting that undocumented immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than Americans who were born here, opponents of illegal immigration emphasized that the suspect had entered the nation illegally.
The politicization of Tibbetts’ murder was dismissed as disinformation by liberals. On August 15, while addressing a crowd of supporters of President Donald Trump in Des Moines, Vice President Mike Pence mentioned the situation and vowed to continue to provide “any and all federal support” to the case.
Likewise, the Tibbetts family issued a statement in August 2018 after the discovery of Tibbetts’ body, requesting time and isolation. Additionally, in response to Donald Trump Jr., Tibbetts’ father called the exploitation of his son’s death for political gain “ruthless” and “despicable”; in particular, he condemned its use against immigrants.
