Mohammad Khairullah News

The belated end of the Muslim holy month of Ramzan was celebrated at the White House this week, but the mayor of New Jersey was denied entry. He demanded on Tuesday (local time) that the administration end the federal “watch list” that he claimed illegally targets Muslims and other people.

Prospect Park Mayor Mohamed Khairullah and several other speakers criticised the list as illegal, racist, and unconstitutional at a news conference conducted in South Plainfield by the New Jersey branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ). Additionally, they demanded that the US Secret Service and other federal organisations stop using and disseminating the list, which according to the organisation has more than 1.5 million names and is primarily “Arab.”

CAIR has urged the Biden administration to stop the FBI from disseminating data from a database of hundreds of thousands of people known as a “Terrorist Screening Data Set.” Khairullah was notified that a person with his name and birthdate was in a dataset that CAIR lawyers had acquired in 2019.

Khairullah claimed that shortly before he was scheduled to arrive at the White House for the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration on Monday, he received a call from the White House informing him that the Secret Service had not cleared him for entry and that he could not attend the event where Biden spoke to hundreds of guests.

There is “no reason to believe I’m an unsafe person,” Khairullah added, adding that he has no idea why his information is on the list and that no one in the federal government will tell him. Khairullah mentioned that he had gone through certain “humiliating” events when being held and interrogated while travelling.

Khairullah, who was chosen in January to serve a fifth term as mayor of his town, said, “I’m not disappointed about not being at the White House. It has to do with human rights. An occurrence like this makes me doubt the advancement I believed we had achieved, as I have a platform to discuss this issue but over 1.5 million people do not.

There is no transparency in how or why persons are added to or removed from the list, according to Selaedin Maksut, executive director of the CAIR chapter, and there is no recourse available for those who wish to have their names removed.

“Two decades after 9/11, the harm caused by watch lists is still evident. We continue to observe how it interferes with the civil rights of both American Muslims and Americans in general, according to Maksut. Khairullah was denied access to the White House compound, a Secret Service spokeswoman said, but he would not elaborate. Additionally, the White House declined to comment.
