Manny Martínez, best known as the drummer of Misfits, died at the age of 69.
According to his good friend, Zach Rector, the musician died sometime before December 17. His official date of death and cause of death were not revealed. “I’m going to miss you, brother Manny Martínez,” Rector wrote in the publication. “A true living legend, a student of Buddy Rich.”
Rector also recalled that Martínez had told him on multiple occasions that Rich had brought out “his skills” while climbing. “An original MISFITS period. Everyone stands up, always talks about work and progress in my house. I would call him. [and] talk a lot about carpentry topics [and] how I should devise the reconfiguration of the upstairs of this old house of mine that was built in 1872… More than a simple musician, artist [and] carpenter… He was my friend, Rest easy Manny.”
Manny Martínez notably replaced the band’s original drummer, Mr. Jim. He and Glenn Danzig played together before meeting Jeff Caiafa. However, after Caiafa began calling himself “Jerry Only”, he and Danzig decided that Martínez was untrustworthy. Mr. Jim was then called in to replace Martinez.
Danzig and Only have been the only two consistent members of the band until their dissolution in 1983. However, the group finally got back together in 1995.
According to various outlets, Martínez is largely credited with introducing Danzig to Only. Blabbermouth added that Martínez’s recordings with the Misfits appear on the band’s box set, which was released in 1996.
