Bamber was subsequently replaced by Alan Mullery, who took the club to the First Division in 1978/79. He also hired Jimmy Melia as manager and led the club to its only FA Cup final in 1983. The club lost in the final and were relegated to the Second Division the following season. Bamber left the board a year later, in the summer of 1984, when Bryan Bedson took over as president.
