Michael Strahan opens up about his daughter Isabella’s ‘tough’ battle with brain cancer

As his daughter Isabella continues her battle with brain cancer, Michael Strahan opens up about the difficult journey so far.

He Good morning america The co-host revealed during the show that Isabella, 19, has been “struggling” with her treatment after a minor setback landed her back in hospital.

“The last three days have been a little difficult because I had a fever that came and went,” Michael Strahan explained. “I had to take her to the hospital and I thought she would be home a few hours later… It’s been three days, but I hope she’ll be home today.”

Despite having to deal with the symptoms of chemotherapy, Strahan said Isabela hasn’t faced anything that wasn’t “expected.”

“It’s hard to see her go through that,” Michael Strahan continued. “But I know she’s a tough young woman and she’s going to get through it.”

Strahan further explained that it has been helpful for Isabella to document her journey in her YouTube series. Isabella started the series to benefit Duke Children’s Hospital & Health Center.

“I think a lot of people came up to her and said, ‘I’m glad you’re doing this,’ ‘Thank you for doing this,’ ‘This has really helped us,’” he said. “And all that support that she gets from people she doesn’t know, as well as people she does know, has kept her in a very positive space,” she said. “So thank you all.”

Last fall, Michael Strahan’s daughter was diagnosed with medulloblastoma. This is a common malignant tumor that grows in the cerebellum.

After Michael Strahan announced her condition on air, Isabella was interviewed on Good morning america about the situation. She revealed that she began experiencing headaches during her freshman year at the University of Southern California.

“They’ve spent like two months keeping it a secret, which is definitely hard,” Isabella explained. “I don’t want to hide it anymore because it’s hard to always keep it inside. I hope to simply be a voice and be [someone] who maybe [those who] are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation.

Isabella later said that the experience has given her a new perspective on life. Michael Strahan also said he sees life very differently after his daughter’s diagnosis.

“You learn that you’re probably not as strong as you thought when you have to really think about real things,” he said. “And I realized that I need everyone’s support.”

“You think, ‘I’m the athlete, the tough guy, you know, I can handle it, I’m the father of the family.’ It’s not about any of that. It doesn’t matter. And it really made me change my perspective on a lot of things in my life.”
