Melissa Barrera feels ‘grateful for everything’ after being fired from the ‘Scream’ franchise

“Honestly, I think I’m finally becoming who I’m supposed to be in life,” he told Associative press during an appearance at the Sundance Film Festival. “And the last few months have been a great awakening of that. “I am very grateful for everything that has happened.”

Barrera began starring in the franchise as Samantha Carpenter in Shout (2022) and reprized his role in Scream VI (2023). She was also set to star in the next Shout 7. However, after advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza, she was fired.

The actress expressed her belief that Israel was committing “genocide” and “brutally killing innocent Palestinians, mothers and children, under the pretext of destroying Hamas.”

“The Western media only shows the [Israeli] side,” he wrote in October 2023, according to the guardian. “Why do they do that? I’ll let you figure it out for yourself. We don’t need more hate. No Islamophobia. No anti-Semitism.”

‘Scream 7’ is still in production

Shout Production company Spyglass quietly fired Melissa Barrera shortly after the comments. A representative finally made a statement on the situation saying: “Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: we have zero tolerance for anti-Semitism or hate speech in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, distortion of the Holocaust. or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”

In his defense, Barrera shared a statement on his Instagram stories that read: “First and foremost, I condemn anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. “I condemn hatred and prejudice of any kind against any group of people.”

However, he said he would continue to use his platform to “raise awareness about issues” that matter to him.

“Every person on this earth, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or socioeconomic status, deserves equal human rights, dignity and, of course, freedom,” he continued. “I believe that a group of people are NOT your leaders and that no governing body should be above criticism.”

Shout 7 is still in production and Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown are the only two former co-stars confirmed to be returning to the screen. Courtney Cox is also rumored to be involved. The film is expected to be released in late 2024 or early 2025.
