Mehul was born on 5 May 1959 in Mumbai, India. He runs Gitanjali Gems Limited, one of the largest integrated diamond and jewelery retailers in India. The company exports its diamond and jewelery products to international markets as well as to Italy, Antwerp, China, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong etc. Gitanjali has various jewelery products and diamond brands like Gili, Nakshatra, Asmi, D. ‘Damas, Maya, Diya, Sangini, Collection G, Gold Expressions, etc.

- In February 2018, Punjab National Bank (PNB) filed a complaint against his nephew Nirav Modi for allegedly owing the bank nearly Rs. 11, 400 crores. According to reports, Mehul Choksi, Ami Modi (Nirav Modi’s wife) and Nishal Modi (Nirav Modi’s brother) are also involved in this fraud case. The bank also claimed that they were involved in a fraud in the issuance of bank guarantees or Letters of Undertakings (LoUs) at the bank’s mid corporate branch in Brady House, Mumbai.
