Retief, also known as “The Iceman” and “The Goose”, was struck by lightning in 1985 as a teenager. He was just four days short of his 16th birthday when the incident occurred at the Pietersburg Golf Club, where he was waiting out a rainstorm before hitting the golf course. His friend, Henri Potgieter, who was walking 20 yards ahead, was knocked down, while Goosen ‘was smoking, without clothes, burnt black from head to tail.’ Fortunately, a doctor was present on the golf course when Potgieter went to seek help.
Three weeks after the lightning strike, he was back on the golf course. He hasn’t looked back since. Retief’s dedication and natural talent for golf brought him tremendous success in later years, including two US Open victories.
