Maxi Jazz, frontman of the electronic band Faithless, has just died at the age of 65. On December 24, 2022, his death was announced via the band’s official Twitter account, stating that he passed away in sleep:
“Maxi Jazz died quietly in her sleep last night and we are deeply saddened. He is a guy who has impacted our lives in so many ways. He gave our music real meaning and purpose. He’s a great person, always makes time for everyone, and has insights that are both insightful and accessible.”
In a subsequent Facebook post, the band noted that Jazz brought “appropriate meaning and purpose to our music.” The message went on to call him “a great musician, a great guy and a genius” and added:
“He’s also a kind human being, always making time for everyone and offering insightful yet accessible advice. Working with him has been an honor and of course a great pleasure.”
As of this writing, his cause of death has not yet been revealed.
“A poet, a gentleman and a true original,” the Twitter user said after Maxi Jazz’s death.
Following news of Jazz’s death, Twitterati paid tribute to the late performer. Armin van Buuren, MistaJam, Tom Warren and Kamal Ahmed are among those who have recognized his contribution to the world of music. Meanwhile, some users of the platform admire Jazz’s skills and post old videos of him playing on stage with his band Faithless.

Maxi Jazz’s musical career began in the early 1980s as a DJ.
Maxi Jazz was born on 14 June 1957 in Brixton, South London. He started his music career as a DJ at Soul Food Cafe System in 1984. Tam Tam Records signed his band in 1989. Jazz later formed Faithless with Rollo and Sister Bliss in 1995, and the quartet released their first album Reverence the following year. The album also includes the band’s signature song, Insomnia, widely recognized as one of the greatest dance songs of all time.
Faithless then released their second album, 8PM Sunday, which was nominated for a Mercury Music Award. The album also includes their song God Is A DJ, which earned them a BRIT Award nomination for Best British Dance Performance. Forever Faithless, their best-selling CD, quadrupled platinum and became the best-selling dance album in 2005. Additionally, they performed at the 2002 Glastonbury Festival.
Although the band disbanded in 2011, during the Covid epidemic, they released a studio album bypassing Maxi Jazz, who was in another band Maxi Jazz & The E-Type Boys. During the previous band’s absence, the musician began composing for the band in 2013. The Maxi Jazz & The E-Type Boys’ website defined their music as “melodic funk and blues mixed with beat” reggae, dub background [and] Jamaican tunes.” In honor of jazz, DJ Dave Peace noted the importance of Faithless to the UK dance music scene and called Maxi “a warm, cold, kind spirit and a poet of music. dance”.
