Although it was initially stated that his contract would not be renewed, the SABC later claimed that he had been dismissed for gross insubordination. The decision sparked a public campaign calling for his reinstatement, and the SABC’s handling of it sparked complaints to the South African Broadcasting Complaints Commission.
The incident was interpreted as an example of how a public broadcaster voluntarily transforms itself into a state propaganda apparatus.
