“I was assaulted often! I’ve been mugged all over the Village, Times Square, Upper West Side,” Matthew shared with host Bruce Bozzi.
Ironically, Matthew added: “I never had any money! And people constantly wanted [to mug me].”
As for why he was a frequent target, Matthew believes it’s because he was “a young guy.”
“I’m talking like 12 [years old] “That’s when it happened a lot,” Matthew said. “It was mostly other kids just bullying and getting lunch money or something like that. But sometimes it was a little scary.”
Matthew also recalled a time when he and a friend were skating in Central Park and a “huge gang flew out” and stole their skateboards.
“They hit me on the head with some kind of stick!” Mateo remembered. “It wasn’t a joke. Thank God, we all survived.”
Matthew later noted that the times he was assaulted “weren’t like that” and were much “more intimidating” with the attackers telling him, “I’m going to put your head through the glass!”
“You get on the subway and someone sits next to you, puts their arm around you quite aggressively and says, ‘What do you have in your pocket?’ What is your name?’ —It will be like asking you a lot of questions,” Matthew explained. “[You’re] just waiting, praying for the train to come out of the tunnel on the platform.”
Matthew also said that “sometimes a police officer would come to our school and give us a talk. [about] “How to react appropriately when you are assaulted.”
“He said, ‘Always bring money with you. Don’t leave without money, leave it immediately and try to do the experience as quickly as possible,’” Matthew recalled of the officer’s advice. “’The longer you’re haggling or arguing, the longer you’re in this situation, the worse it is.’”
Matthew said he told his parents that he had been mugged “only once or twice,” but that “back then, they weren’t as vigilant as we are with our kids.” [nowadays.]”
“They were like, ‘Go to a park and be there in time for dinner,’” Matthew said. “And that was it.”
Bruce noted that the New York City Matthew grew up in “is different than what it is now for his kids,” and Matthew agreed, saying, “Yeah, it sure is.”
Matthew still lives in New York with his wife Sarah Jessica Parker and their three children: son James Wilke, 20, and twin daughters Tabitha Hodge and Marion Loretta Elwell, 14.
During another recent one, Matthew recalled struggling to find work after starring in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
