In January 2024, Maryam’s derogatory remarks against PM Modi after she posted a video of herself on a beach in Lakshadweep created a diplomatic row between India and Maldives. Following Shiuna’s remarks, the Maldivian government suspended him from the post of cabinet minister and two other ministers in the Mohammed Muizzu government for making indecent comments against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India.

Mariam Shiuna started her career as a journalist at Huvadhoo in Male, Maldives. On 12 February 2016, Mariam joined WeTV as a presenter. He worked there till 30 September 2017. He also worked as a presenter for the channel before being promoted to the position of Head of News on 16 September 2021. He worked there till 20 December 2021. Over 8,000 hotel bookings and 2500 flight tickets from India to Maldives were canceled after several Indian celebrities, including Akshay Kumar, Sachin Tendulkar and Aakash Chopra, requested Indians to cancel trips to Maldives and opt for domestic destinations instead. “All government officials responsible for the comments have been immediately suspended from their posts.”
