On August 31, Democrat Mary Peltola was elected to Alaska’s only seat in the United States House of Representatives in a special election. She defeated former Republican governor Sarah Palin, who was planning to return to politics. According to unofficial results from the Alaska Department of Elections, Peltola won the seat after calculating the ranking vote results. He will now serve the remainder of the term of the late Republican Representative Don Young, who passed away in March 2022 after more than 50 years in the position.
According to NPR, Mary Peltola won by a tight margin, receiving 91,206 votes to Palin’s 85,987. With the election of Peltola, she became the first member of Congress born in Alaska. Mary Peltola, a Yup’ik woman from Anchorage, Alaska, age 48. She graduated from the University of Alaska and the University of Northern Colorado. After leaving the state legislature, she founded Sattler Strategies and is head of community development and sustainability at Donlin Gold. From 2011 to 2013, she was interim executive director of the Kuskokwim River Tribal Fish Commission and a councilor in Bethel, Alaska. She was a member of the Alaska House of Representatives from 1999 to 2009.
