The Marvel Cinematic Universe hit what was considered something of a roadblock with the release of Eternals in 2021.
Starring the likes of Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, and Salma Hayek, the film wasn’t the kind of overwhelming box office success that many other films for the MCU have had.
Two years after the film’s release, any plans for a sequel have apparently been put on hold for the time being. However, now we are learning a different version of the story that almost made it to our television screens.

While in the comic club On the podcast, John Ridley revealed that he had been tapped to develop a show, which has since been scrapped, based on the Eternals comic books.
“It was a television version of The eternal”he said via Variety. “But well. My version was the good one. It was so fucking strange. There was my version, a good version, which is good for me, which… that doesn’t mean anything. There was the version that [Marvel] I ended up doing, which I don’t think that version was particularly good. I’ll be honest.”
John explained that his story was “really strange.”
“My version started with… the first thing you see is a young man, probably about 18 years old. And he’s sitting there and then he puts his hands up. He has a drill. And he turns on the drill, puts it to his ear, and starts pushing it in. And then he goes on from there,” he recalled. “That’s the beginning, right? This is how it begins. And then I think you see another kid… he sleeps in the bathtub and covers himself with aluminum foil.”
From the looks of it, John doesn’t feel bad about writing him off. In fact, he described it as “the best thing that can happen to all of us.”
“I don’t know if it would have been entertaining,” he admitted. “And I want to say that what I find entertaining is often not entertaining. Populist, which is great for a lot of the work I do, but I needed to be a little more popular.”
The last time we received an update on a possible Eternals the sequel was in 2022.
