When Manuraj Singh Rajput was a child, he was inspired by his mother to learn music and singing. He started singing religious songs in local temples at the age of eleven. Guru Rakesh Bansiwala Ji was the first music teacher of Manuraj Singh Rajput, who taught music in a temple named Bihari Ji in Bharatpur, Rajasthan. His music teacher and his musical skills were described by Manuraj Singh Rajput in one of his blog articles. Manuraj Singh Rajput wrote,
He runs a tea stall and the melodious sound of his flute still resonates in the temple. When I learned a little from him, he started telling stories, bhajans and playing flute in temples. When stage performances were given in the Town Hall of Bharatpur, the audience used to applaud a lot.
Manuraj Singh Rajput was sent by his parents to Jaipur soon after finishing school, to pursue a degree in engineering. According to Manuraj Singh, he got admission in the college of Jaipur, but he never went there for studies. Manuraj Singh Rajput was so inclined towards music and singing that he left college and went to Delhi to learn music from his second music teacher, Ravi Prasanna. His financial expenses were borne by his close friends, and Manuraj Singh Rajput would lie to his parents that he studied in a regular college. In one of his articles he wrote,
The flute kept resonating in my mind every day, so I started learning flute from Sandeep Soni sir here. During this period, friends in college helped me a lot. He used to pay my fine from his pocket money. During my B.Tech training, I stayed at home and started training under Ravi Prasanna sir in Delhi. I took training in ‘Flute’ during two months of engineering training. “After this the real struggle began.”
Manuraj Singh Rajput learns music from the Maihar Gharana of music and belongs to it. Manuraj Singh Rajput told in one of his blogs that he is a disciple of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia of Mumbai. Manuraj Singh Rajput has further stated in his article that Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia did not get admission in his Gurukul easily. Initially, one had to learn basic musical skills and traits in a particular stream from other teachers in the Gurukul. Manuraj Singh Rajput said that he traveled about 1300 km from Bharatpur to Mumbai to enroll in the gurukul of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and learn flute from him. He has written,
Guruji does not give admission to anyone so easily, but due to the notes I got from there, I would come to Bharatpur and practice for six to eight hours daily. Pandit ji saw my ascendant and became happy. I told him that this is my last year of engineering, if I do not get your support then I will have to do engineering job as per the wishes of my family.”
Manuraj Singh Rajput further mentioned his struggle to get admission in Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia’s Gurukul in Mumbai. During his struggle period he was highly inspired by the words and sayings of Swami Vivekananda. One of his favorite quotes is-
The day life does not become difficult, understand that you are on the wrong path.”
He further wrote that he also received six months of training in flute at the Orissa Gurukul of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. From 2011 to 2015, Manuraj Singh Rajput received formal flute training from Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia at his Mumbai Sangeet Gurukul.
