A wheelchair-bound Madonna fan is speaking out after the veteran pop star accidentally asked her to stand up at a recent concert. The fan in question, Vanessa Gorman, is paraplegic due to a car accident in 1999.
However, Gorman has no hard feelings toward the “Like a Virgin” singer. “Some people are in wheelchairs and can stand up. [Madonna] “I had no idea I was paralyzed,” Gorman said. TMZ Friday. He also mentioned that he believes Madonna did not intend to be cruel during the interaction.
Earlier this month, Material Girl criticized Gorman for remaining seated during her concert in Los Angeles. “What are you doing sitting there? What do you get sitting down? Madonna asked the wheelchair-bound fan. In a video posted to TikTok, the 65-year-old singer approaches the fan after popping the question.
However, he soon recognized his mistake and quickly apologized. “Ah, OK. Politically incorrect. Sorry,” Madonna said from the stage. “I’m glad you’re here.”
Fans felt Madonna’s apology was missing after embarrassing moment
The video, which has been viewed more than 2 million times, sparked outrage online. Many fans felt that Madonna was not only rude to her in a wheelchair, but that her apology was dismissive.
“I feel like I should have refunded the person’s ticket,” one fan wrote. “Ma’am, there are 100 reasons why someone might sit down, and they are all valid,” another added. “She didn’t apologize enough,” another user noted.
Madonna calling a fan in a wheelchair is not the first mistake on her current tour
However, the inadvertent mistake isn’t the only embarrassing moment on Madonna’s “Celebration” tour. While in Seattle, the singer experienced a fall while performing her 1986 hit “Open Your Heart.” The incident occurred when one of her dancers appeared to trip over her while sliding her across the stage.
However, the experienced singer skillfully handled the situation. She told the crowd: “Shit, I forgot the words.” Quickly, she turned onto her stomach, kept her song going, and the mishap was ignored.
Page six reported in August 2023 that she was rushed to a New York City hospital and intubated for at least one night after she was found unconscious due to a severe bacterial infection. “The fact that she’s here now is the damn miracle,” she told a Brooklyn audience last December.
