Luke Russert, a former correspondent for NBC News, left his lucrative job to embark on a three-year journey around the globe. He is now publishing a book to tell his story.
News superstar Tim Russert, 37, pushed himself into his work after abruptly losing his father in 2008, continuing on his father’s profession. After eight years, he began to wonder why he was trying to uphold his father’s legacy and made the decision to resign from his position and tour the world.
Russert’s book, Look For Me There, was created over three years and six continents of travel. Now, PEOPLE has exclusive access to the cover, which features Russert gazing out at a scene.
“In my early 30s, I came to a turning point where I felt hollow and unfulfilled. I was curious, “Why?” People are told by Russert. “So, wanting to experience anything, I ventured out into the world. The benefit of travel was that it increased my awareness of my surroundings, including the grandeur of the natural world, the significance of history, and the welfare of the greater human family.
The harsh truths about losing my dad, my relationship with my mum, grief, inadequacy, and ignorance were also forced out, he continues. Despite being my own special story, the themes I address are timeless. I sincerely hope it helps someone who is feeling a little lost.
During his travels, Russert wrote in “dozens” of journals, recording not only his introspective, self-reflective thoughts but also his observations of the places he visited and the people he encountered.
“Journalists don’t like to shine the light just on themselves,” confesses Russert. “My aim was to give some background on a nation and how its people, history, and culture influenced my own introspective journey.
Russert highlighted his newfound freedom to discover himself and his faith in the book when the burden of his family’s legacy was lifted; his mother is the Vanity Fair journalist Maureen Orth.
Russert used the time he had during his voyage to properly process his grief over his father’s untimely death, something he claimed he couldn’t have done without the “power of vulnerability.”
