Singer News Lucy Thomas

Lucy Thomas, 17, of Elmbrook Swimming Club broke her own Wisconsin Swimming LSC record of 17-18 in the 100 breaststroke at the Wisconsin Senior Short Course Championships last month .

Thomas, a freshman at Stanford, won by 58.84, 0.05 seconds short of her previous record. She was a key element in Elmbrook’s four winning relays, and her performance in the 200 relay was marked by a 27.88 breaststroke. Thomas added individual bests in 50 runs (24.54) and 100 freestyles, twice in the event (49.16).

A few weeks later, Thomas broke a few more tenths of her LSC record in the 100 chests with a time of 58.65 at the NCSA Spring Championship. She also set up a PR with 50 breasts from January 27. After top Stanford breaststroke swimmer Allie Raab, in her fifth year, hit 27.34 and 59.20 in the medley relay at the NCAA Championships earlier this month, those achievements would be a welcome sight for Cardinal’s trainers. At the NCAA Tournament, Cardinal finished fourth in the 400 medley relay and ninth in the 200 medley relay.

Thomas broke the LSC 17–18 record with 2:09.16 at NCSA last year at the age of 16. While she may not be able to repeat that feat at this year’s NCSA, Reese Tiltmann’s previous record last year is still surpassed by more than two seconds thanks to her best time of the season of 2:11.10.

Maggie Wanezek, a 17-year-old freshman from Wisconsin and Thomas’s teammate at Elmbrook, has documented her best time in outdoor events, including 50 breaststrokes (30.17). and 100 breaststrokes, but failed to achieve her best in the main event in the backstroke (1:03.98). However, Wanezek broke the 1:50.66 mark of the Wisconsin LSC 17-18 swim set by current standout Reilly Tiltmann of the University of Virginia in 2021 at NCSA by hitting a 1:50, 63 to win back 200 points.

Wanezek (24.31) beat 15-year-old Alana Berlin (24.40) in less than 1/10th of a second in 50 minutes, making for an interesting race. Berlin, a member of the Schroeder YMCA swim team, improved her previous personal record of 24.71 from November 2021 by a few tenths. Wanezek previously scored a point under 24 in this competition, last November with 23.98.
