Linthoi Channambam is an Indian judoka who became the first Indian to win a gold medal in any age category at the World Cadet Judo Championships held at the Arena Hotel Hills in Bosnia and Herzegovina in August 2022. She defeated Bianca Reis of Brazil in the final. Women’s 57 kg category.

Linthoi Channambam was born on Sunday, 31 December 2006 (age 15 years; as in 2021) in Mayang Imphal, Manipur. His zodiac sign is Capricorn.

Linthoi’s father’s name is Ibohal, who is a fish farmer who also works as a mason. His mother’s name is Guneshwori, who is a part-time tailor and housewife. Linthoi has two sisters.

Initially, Linthoi Channambam was very interested in football and boxing and he started playing football and also tried his hand at boxing. Linthoi’s father pushed him to train for judo and he began training for the sport in 2014. In an interview, Linthoi explained the reason behind taking up judo and said,

“I started playing judo as a child because I considered myself a boy, not a girl, and, as a child, I hardly had any friends who were girls. Most of them were boys. I wanted to play a game like judo since childhood. Actually, I also like boxing and football. But there were quite a few judo academies near my hometown. This is what attracted me most towards this sport and my family supported me from the beginning.

In 2014, he enrolled himself at Mayai Lambi Sports Academy, a local training academy in Imphal. In October 2017, to train in a professional set-up, Linthoi began training at Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), a training center in Bellary, Karnataka that trains athletes in five Olympic sports—wrestling, boxing, judo, athletics. Facts/General Knowledge

In 2017, Linthoi was spotted by Mamuka Kizilashvili, head coach of the judo program at Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), Karnataka, in Telangana. Since 2017, he has received training from his coach Mamuka Kizilashvili, who is from Georgia. Talking about Linthoi in an interview, Mamuka said,
I saw him for the first time in Telangana. I was part of the talent identification development program that unearths talented judokas from across India. When I first saw her, I immediately knew she had what it took to become a world-class athlete, even though she was very young.

Linthoi’s coach recommended her to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and they started funding her when she was thirteen. In an interview he praised the efforts of Sports Authority of India (SAI) and said,
“SAI has always helped me and supported me in all my endeavours. I am extremely grateful to Mr. Sandeep Pradhan and SAI for their unwavering support. The immense happiness I feel after winning this gold medal can be attributed to him.

In an interview, Linthoi recalled her childhood memories of beating up boys while growing up in Mayang Imphal, Manipur. He said,
I used to fight with them a lot and even injured some of them. My parents sometimes had to take him to the hospital,”

Linthoi considers Majlinda Kelmendi, a former judoka and judo coach from Kosovo, as her inspiration. In an interview, Linthoi revealed that she aspires to win a gold medal at the Olympics. He said,
“There is a player there, he is from Kosovo. Majlinda Kelmendi. She is the first athlete from Kosovo to win a gold medal at the Olympics (2016). So, I want to become the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in the Olympics.”

In March 2020, when the first lockdown was imposed amid COVID-19, Linthoi was stuck in Akhmeta, Georgia. She was unable to return to India and stayed at the house of Mamuka Kizilashvili (coach) in Georgia for about nine months. In an interview he talked about being away from his family and said,
It was a difficult time for the entire world, as it was for us too. But coach Kizilashvi’s family made sure that I was always happy, even though I was far away from my parents and family,”

Linthoi is fond of dancing to hip-hop music and gardening.

In an interview, Linthoi expressed her happiness on winning the gold medal at the World Cadet Judo Championship 2022 and said,
I really don’t have words and can’t explain how I feel right now. All I know is that I am very happy with this win and I hope to continue it.”
